that the voter out there thought the two had things worked out, that romney and ryan were in this thing together. well, they're not. romney is dying. he can't stand being tied to ryan, and all that budget cutting baggage of his. for his part, ryan is feeling the taint of having a running mate who is unwilling to stand with him, unwilling to be his kind of politician. a conviction politician. so trouble in paradise. mitt's dying to be single again, so is ryan. we all know that politics makes strange bedfellows but the word is out this pair, romney and ryan, are sleeping in separate rooms. i'm joined by msnbc political analyst howard fineman and joy joy-ann reid, managing editor of thegrio.com. more polling data that shows mitt romney trailing. according to a new fox news poll, president obama leads romney by five points among likely voters nationwide. 48% to 43%. catch that, the fox poll. highly significant there. let's go right now to howard on this question. it looks to me like this divorce papers are pretty much out there right now. all that you hear now is romney doesn't really want to be stu

thought and by everyone the romney campaign, i think the obama campaign, most political commentators and critics on the left which i would include myself and paul krugman and others, thought the economy is a driving factor, uphill battle for the president to be re-elected and gdp growth is sluggish, personal income has flat lined, wages stagnant, a lot of things would seem to indicate the economy is not in good shape. but a lot of other indicators that look like the economy is getting better, trend line is very good. in certain states crucially important, ohio has a tremendous turn around and seeing that down to the effect of barack obama and governor john kasic. housing starts have gotten better and de-leveraging process which is households paying down their debts has happened quite in an orderly fashion. i think there's more kind of pent up economic optimism among voters than you would necessarily deduce from the top line numbers. >> push you on the optimism. stipulate what you just described is a big part of the shift but not 100%. >> yeah. >> there's another question here and you

was commenting this morning and i thought it was very smart. yes, mitt romney has made mistakes as a candidate, but that doesn't negate the fact that the obama campaign has done some good things, including their analysis was running a lot of early ads to define mitt romney before he could define himself. so he had this reputation as this rich guy who didn't understand regular people, and then when you ad some of these other things in, it becomes almost insurmountable. do you agree with that analysis? was the obama campaign ultimately smart to spend that money early? >> they were very smart. they did exactly to mitt romney what george bush did to john kerry a few years ago. but romney's people should have been smart enough to know this was happening. there was no presumption of that. they didn't get out aahead of the story. they didn't define their candidate well. there's two parts to this election, chris. one, is romney said a lot of people are unhappy with obama and his leadership and the economy. we accept that. he never made the connection that i'm the answer and solution. that's where the

in the next ten days is mitt romney. >> let me ask you about your thought of where the campaign is right now, and if he's in the cross hairs feeling the heat, is he the kind of guy that stomach bems and withers, or is he the candidate to take that as i'm hitting rock bottom and i'm going to start to climb up? >> well, i mean, mitt romney has shown a lot of resolve through the primaries, and he bounced back from a lot of bad periods. i remember well in september of 2000 we called it black september and we were down 3 to 5 points. it wasn't until the dethe baits we turned things around. there's opportunity here for sure, but what the romney campaign has to do, which is sort of what charles krauthhammer is saying is start to talk about policy and go big. >> how does do that? >> he takes an opportunity at the dethe bait to have defining moments. he can talk specifically about the tax plan he put out there, put specifics on the table. talk about where the deductions are going come from, talk about the entitlement reforms. talk about how, in fact, it's mitt romney mean-testing entitlement reforms.

who's saying that these polls suggest that governor romney is winning. please tell me how you arrive at that. >> sure. well, karl rove i think has some thoughts like that. let me go through it. what's going on now is these polls are assuming that you have the same high level of african american, latino and young people vote in 2012 that you had in 2008. not the normal level, which you had in '04, '00, '06 and so on. the pollsters are awaiting the data to assume you have that level. so, for example, in 2008, 14% of the vote was cast by african americans. in 2004, in all the other years, only 11% was. in 2010, only 11% was. so what the pollsters is doing is weighting up the number of black interviews, giving them more weight so that they account for 14% of the sample, not 11%. for young people, they historically have been 12% of the vote. they're weighting it up to the 18% that it was in 2008. latinos have always been 7%. they're weighting it up to 9%. they're doing so either because they're in the -- i believe misguided impression -- that the electorate of 2012 will be the same as '08

's green bay-seattle game. bill: i thought they would give them slack until sunday afternoon. first quarter at baltimore. essential question for the campaign of the president. stay the course with president obama or go with governor romney. brand new fox polling shows this. a largely percentage of the likely voters believe the country's policies need to change. governor mike huckabee, former governor of arkansas and host of "huckabee". what does that tell you? >> it shows how dissatisfied people are. when you get to 75%, who is the 25% who thinks we're doing things right? where do they get their information? but it's bad news because it shows that this is not a partisan divide. you have independents, democrats and republicans that have to somehow make up that 75%. so it's clear whatever the policies are of the obama administration, they're not popular. bill: when you look at this phrase, many policies, that could be a number about of things in all honesty. >> sure. bill: what i think it tells you more than anything people are not happy. that goes to kind of a right track wrong track thing.

any republican we know who is not on mitt romney's payroll will tell you that that is just not the kind of inconsistency that he can afford at this point given the deficits he faces. >> your thoughts, john. >> well, look, chris, i just think he's in an untenable position, and he has been all along. the bottom line on mitt romney is he's proud of his massachusetts health care law. there's part of him that wants to defend it, there's part of him that's always wanted to defend it, and he found himself running in a republican primary where he couldn't defend it as forthrightly as i think what his heart would have wanted to do. so he twisted himself up in a lot of knots. i think there's some theoretical way in which you could make a federalist argument, but he hasn't made that argument consistently either. he should have stood up and said the individual mandate is a conservative policy. it was invented at the heritage foundation and embraced by conservatives as recently as a decade ago. he could have made the argument for health care and said that's what the conservative positio
